Heritage Irish Dexter Cattle
We are excited to add heritage Irish Dexter Cattle to our farm!
Dexter cattle are considered a tri-purpose animal. They are suitable for meat, milk, and also can be trained as oxen. These animals are very hardy and they can thrive in both hot and cold climates year round, given proper feed and shelter they can survive just about anywhere.
Dexters are the perfect size for the family homestead. One Dexter cow will give about 1 to 2 gallons of milk a day, a much more manageable amount for a single family than the 6-8 gallons a typical Jersey yields. A milking cow can produce more milk for its weight that any other breed. The daily milk yield averages from 1 to 3 gallons per day with a butterfat content of 4 to 5%.
If you raise a Dexter for beef -which you should!- you'll need room in the freezer for about 400 pounds of meat, rather than 600 to 800 pounds you'd get from a typical full-size steer. Pound for pound, Dexter cattle cost less from birth to the finished product. Economically, these animals have the ability of turning forage into rich milk and quality lean meat.
Owning a Dexter is like owning a piece of history and doing your part to help preserve genetic diversity. They are one of the world's smallest true breeds of cattle, not a miniature developed from a larger breed.
We are members of Legacy Dexter Cattle Registry, Purebred Dexter Cattle Association and the Dexter Cattle Club of Tennessee. Click on the pictures below to learn more about each Association and what they have to offer.
